Does auto Insurance go ski high after you get an impaired driving charge?

.

ve a friend who is getting his licence back in April and he was told it may cost $7000.00 a year for auto insurance- could it be true?

Insurance is baed on the amount of RISK.

Someone with a conviction (and if license was taken away he was convicted) is more likely to have a accident and a serious one so the the risk is higher.

People who are higher risk pay more.

Poor credit rating = high risk = pay more intrest on cards and home loans -- becuase thye are more likley to not pay the money back.

Previous accident or moving violation, or DUI then more likely to file claim for insurance.

Young and foolish - more likely to have accident so pay more.

High performance sports car ? - pay more.

Middle aged, professioanl, with minivan -- pay less.

That's why sex offenders cant be around kids, and thiefs cant work in banks, fire-bugs cant be firemen.

Obese, old, smokers pay more for health/life insurance-- cause they use more. Sky diver -- we dont cover that.

It goes up, yes. How much, that depends on your provider. If it's outragiously high, he can look around for other coverage, he doesn't HAVE to keep the one he has. But that doesn't mean other insurance companys will definatly be cheaper, but it's possible.

Anyway tell him to shop around, he might find something better.

But yeah $7,000, that's not too surprising for someone that was DUI. A bit on the high side from what I've heard, but not surprising at all.

I bet he won't do that again, good lesson for him..

Oh and let me add...My insurance doubled because someone else was DUI in my car and wrecked it. I was not driving it, nor was I even it. Yet MY INSURANCE went up and stayed up for 6 years. All because of HIS DUI....

So yeah, sorry, I gotta say whether or not you're "convicted" really doesn't matter. not in CT anyway.

Hard lesson to learn -- but that is the truth...

Because after a conviction for a charge like that, you are now, for the next 3 years at least, a risk to the insurance company, and also probably required to do an SR22 filing with the state. That makes you assigned risk. $7 grand a year sounds a bit high, but there may be other factors I'm not aware of. So yes, it could be true.

I just came accross this website, a lot of info on Auto Insurance Quotes which may help you:

Just the charge won't do anything to your record, but a conviction will.

If he's young and has a conviction like that, I think he's telling the truth.

I don't know where you live, but here in California a DUI arrest and conviction costs an enormous amount of money in terms of court and legal fees. Once all that is settled then the insurance companies get involved and the figure you are quoting doesn't sound far off at all. I think their rational is that considering the huge liability that the drinking driver presents that they need to charge exhorbitant fees to protect their interests.

THE ONLY WAY TO REALLY FIND OUT IS FIND OUT

Yup cause your risk went up
